“So impressed… job is superb… cut out almost all the noise we had from the main road. Units look fantastic - you would hardly know they are there.

Tonight it has been so warm we have had to open doors and I have taken my jumper off - totally unheard of after about August each year let alone in November!  Totally blown away with this job.”

We were so delighted with this 10 out of 10 verified CheckaTrade review that we thought we’d share the back story!

Secondary glazing makes heritage homes quiet and comfortable

For the owners of this beautiful half-timbered village property on a busy road near Ipswich, the priority was to cut out the traffic noise.

Unphased by the wonky windows, Mr Misty was upfront about the difference installing secondary glazing professionally would make to the unwelcome noise pollution and could share the good news about all the additional benefits it would bring too.

At Mr Misty, we always advise that secondary glazing can’t make your windows 100% sound proof, but we can dramatically improve the noise issue through secondary glazing for heritage homes by either up to 60% , or even 70-80% in some cases.

It all depends on the thickness of  the glass we install and the size of the gap which can be accommodated between the existing window and the additional secondary window frame.

The big reveal

Secondary glazing can make a huge difference if the secondary glass close to the window, but the further away the secondary pane can sit, the more soundproofing benefit there’ll be – and that’s all down to the size of the reveal – the depth of the window area itself from the window frame to the interior walls.

Big reveals allow the secondary frame to sit back from the window. This means that the sound waves become greater, lessening their impact when they travel through the laminated glass made of 3 glass layers stuck together. There are a range of acoustic laminated glass thicknesses -  6.8mm and 8.8mm with about 25% price difference between the two.

Wonky windows? No problem!

At Mr Misty, we are specialist installers of secondary glazing for heritage homes in Suffolk and Essex and often work on wonky windows. We know how best to adapt to their quirky character!

Our secondary glazing frames are mainly aluminium, but we house this within a timber subframe.

This allows us to plane down and cut into the frame to get the secondary frame to sit square onto a wonky window. It’s important that there is no twist or bend in the frame, or this would mean that the secondary glazing wouldn’t operate correctly.

At this property, we fitted secondary glazing to roadside windows, both upstairs and down. You have to look hard to see the sliding window frames of the secondary glazing against the original windows – a professional job well done, they match up brilliantly !
