3 Top Tips for Cost-effective Garden Rooms Suffolk and Essex Plan Ahead - Save £££s

Mr Misty shares his top 3 tips for choosing garden rooms full of creature comforts that are warm, safe, secure - and won’t cost the earth in running costs.

Dreaming of a stand-alone home office, entertainment space or personal gym? Thinking of installing a single storey garden build at your property in Suffolk or Essex? Garden rooms have become a go-to solution for hubbub-free homeworking and upsizing without the expense and inconvenience of a move. But is the grass (or living space) always greener at the other end of the garden?

At Mr Misty, we are glazing specialists with the keenest of interests in energy efficient glazing and the smart technologies which can make your home or work space – wherever that may be – as welcoming and cost-effective as possible.

We recognise that however attractive or eco the actual build components of constructions are, what really delivers on the investment is the useability and ongoing affordability of the space created. It’s all about looking to the future in more ways than one.

1 – Create a long-term useful space from the outset.

Whether you can work within the realms of permitted development or require planning permission for you garden room, choose an experienced company – like Ipswich-based HomeWorks garden buildings, established by Mr Misty’s founder, Joshua Sheppard - who will ask the right questions and can create a bespoke build to meet your needs now and going forward.

Want a gym? Why not plan in a shower too? Utilities can make all the difference, but it’s best to plan them in at the design-stage of the build.

Fancy lots of natural light, but want to be able to open up the space with more than just patio doors? Think about bi-folding doors – with robust yet sleek, slimline aluminium frames perhaps. Choosing lots of natural light does not mean compromising on security, sound-proofing or insulation either. What’s important is that the double or triple glazed units are quality products with performance guarantees. They should be appropriate for the build and above all fitted professionally.

Concerned about security? Ensure that your windows and doors are fitted with laminated security glass. Quality windows will have robust mechanisms and locks, likewise quality double glazed doors fitted with multi-point locking systems.

Want an efficient heating system? Air source heat pumps are top of the green agenda and are highly suited to supporting space-saving and energy efficient underfloor heating systems - but underfloor heating doesn’t lend itself to being an after-thought!

Don’t forget to ensure that your garden build is fully insulated throughout and that the glass you choose is top rated for energy efficiency too.

2 – Keep the maintenance tasks to a minimum

If you’re creating a space to enjoy more of life and relax, or work with minimum commute time, the last thing you’ll want to do is create another building at your property which requires regular maintenance!

Windows and doors - In contrast to timber framed units, UPVC doors and windows are easy-clean, don’t require any painting and only need a little TLC from time to time to keep rollers, hinges and handles working smoothly. Aluminium which is fully recyclable has much greener credentials and has the same low maintenance appeal.

Exterior Weatherboarding - Cedar or pine cladding can be a very attractive part of a garden room, helping it blend with the surroundings and naturally aging with time – but this sort of weatherboarding does require some regular waterproofing treatment.

For a New England garden building look, cement-fibre planking products like HardiePlank provide a smart, fade-resistant, zero maintenance solution with impressive product guarantees too.

3 – Think smart

Imagine being able to control internal and external lighting, security systems, electric heating and any go-to gadgets at the touch of a button or smart phone screen! Smart reader technologies can be  a great way to keep an eye on your garden property and drive down energy bills.

Concerned about security? CCTV, alarm systems and security lighting can be fitted to your garden building and accessible through smart phone apps, so you can rest assured that your property is never out of mind – no matter how out of sight it may be.

Want to cosy up, but keep energy bills down? Simply get switched on to smart electrics, so you can heat your garden room how you want it, to  be enjoyed when you want it - without even having to take a trip down the garden path to switch things on or adjust thermostats.
